As it turns out, sharing our guest room mood board last month was the push I needed to really get things going on completing the room. To be honest, I wouldn’t really call any room in our home “done” yet – there are a few tweaks on my list for every single room. But at this point, the guest room is definitely the closest, so I’ve made it my goal to finish the room by the end of this month!
I discussed some of our plans for the room in a previous post, but with three weeks left to reach my goal of finishing the room by the end of August, I figured it’s time to sit down and make a punch list of what’s left to do in the guest room. Since my previous post about the guest room, I already checked one item off the list when I found the perfect vintage dresser on Facebook Marketplace for $90! We moved it up to the room on Friday and I’m seriously in love. The previous dresser in here was fine, but it was a basic IKEA dresser and didn’t add much to the space. The new one is dripping with character and makes the room feel so much more thoughtful. I couldn’t love it more! As for the rest of the punch list – most of the pieces have been purchased already, so at this point all that’s left is waiting for everything to arrive and then the installation of the final details!

The Punch List
1. Set up new bed frame and mattress
We’ve had our current guest room bed for about 5 years, but it’s a full bed (and a small full bed at that). Considering that we typically have someone staying in our guest room at least once a month, it’s been time to upgrade to a queen for a while. I’ve had my eye on this gorgeous upholstered wingback bed for years, but as someone who cringes at spending serious money on furniture, for the longest time I hadn’t been able to justify the price when there are plenty of cheaper options. But after lusting over this bed for a solid three years, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and ordered it last week. It arrived a short three days later and it’s currently sitting in the garage until the mattress and box spring arrive and I cannot wait to set it up! I know the creamy linen fabric will be the perfect contrast to our moody green walls and our guests will appreciate the extra space that comes with a queen bed.
2. Install brass sconces
I pinned these brass sconces to my house pinboard within the first month of moving into this house, but I knew we’d eventually upgrade the guest bed to a queen, so I didn’t want to order them until then. Of course at the time, my delusional self thought the guest room would be done within a year of moving in (LOL). Regardless, the first thing I did after we ordered a new bed was add these to my cart! They shipped lightning fast and I have to say I’m really pleased with the quality for the price (less than $100 for both). They’re a pretty brass color and I think they’ll add some needed character to the room!
3. Hang blackout curtains
The curtains we have in the guest room right now are pretty sheer, and although they’re fine for privacy purposes, the guest room is a room that needs blackout curtains. The room faces the street and our street lights are on all night, so blackout curtains will make it a lot easier to sleep in that room. I picked up a pair of my favorite Target blackout curtains over the weekend that will work perfectly. In addition to being more practical, I think they’ll also add more character to the room since the old curtains were plain white and these ones are more of a linen color with some nice texture.
4. Hire electrician to install new ceiling light fixture
When we moved in, none of the bedrooms in our house had overhead lighting. Darian and I are both hot sleepers, so we had a ceiling fan installed in the bedroom pretty much immediately, but we only had the budget to get lighting installed in one other room. We chose the office since Darian was working from home full time due to COVID at the time, and the room only has one small window so it really needed overhead light. A ceiling light fixture for the guest room has been on our to-do list ever since, and it’s finally time to make it happen. I’m not typically a fan of overhead lighting (I let out an audible screech any time Darian attempts to turn on our bedroom ceiling light), but with the right fixture I think it can look really nice. With the dark paint color in the guest room and limited space for lamps on the nightstands, I think an overhead light just makes more sense. I’m still debating what kind of fixture I want – I know I want something brass and I’ve been leaning toward this simple and affordable one, but I’m not sure if it’s too small for the room. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
5. Make a final decision on the window wall
We currently have an accent chair in the corner next to the bed, but once the new bed goes in we’ll be moving it to the crawl space (we have to hang on to it because we use it as a fifth dining chair when my parents and Darian’s mom are both visiting). And as soon as we have a ceiling light fixture put in, we won’t need the lamp in the corner either, so the wall to the right of the window will be empty. I’m debating whether or not to do something with it (maybe just a luggage rack with some art hung above it?), and ultimately I think I’ll need to wait until everything else is in place to make a final decision on it.
6. Finishing touches
After the first five items on the punch list comes my favorite part – the finishing touches! I’m pretty happy with where this room is at in terms of decorative accents, but there are one or two finishing touches I’d like to make once the new furniture and lighting is in. The guest room currently has a lot of greenery that sort of fades into the background thanks to the green walls, so I’m going to swap out the faux eucalyptus on the dresser for these deep purple dried florals that I ordered over the weekend – fingers crossed that they’re as good in person as they are in the picture! I also swapped out the small books on the dresser for some larger ones and I think the scale works much better with the lamp. The final touch will be new sheets and a new throw blanket for the bed! We picked up these sheets on Sunday and I love how the stripe detail makes them feel a little special. I initially ordered this throw blanket in the caramel color to add some texture to the bedding, but it was much more orange in person, so I returned it and ordered the khaki instead. I’m hoping it will compliment the wall color while standing out against our white bedding.
Once these last few items are checked off the list, I will officially consider the guest room done! It’s going to feel so good to finally have a 100% completed room, especially since it doubles at my office so I spend the majority of my day in here. I’ll be sure to take some photos and post a final reveal here, and I can’t wait to share the finished space with you all!
